CHANGING THE SKIES & LANDSCAPE
"Feel it, It is Here" is the slogan used by the SABC as the country is gaining ever increasing momentum to the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup - the biggest event Africa has and probably will ever host ...

When it comes to the Dolphin Coast Community, this slogan can be applied as well...

On the first of May, the "bits and pieces" we had been hearing about the New King Shaka International Airport finally came together as the "big birds" landed and took off, changing the skies and landscape of the Dolphin Coast dramatically.

From subsequent reports in the local media, it is apparent that people in the community have very different opinions of and mixed feelings about this development. To me, the new airport symbolises achievement, change and growth. There is a saying that the only constant thing in life is change, and we are now experiencing it in a big way. I have been living in the area for most of my life, and have watched it change and grow, but the new airport, I feel, is bringing about big change and, at the same, even bigger growth. KwaZulu Natal is the second highest contributor to the South African GDP - 17.7% after Gauteng's 33.3%. I have a strong feeling that this contribution is going to increase substantially as a result of the King Shaka International Airport - "Feel It. It is Here".

Change is very evident in our community, so let's embrace it and by doing this, we will contribute towards its development and growth in a meaningful way!

Best Regards,

From the desk of Brettenwood Coastal Estate's New Estate Manager!
As a pilot I have had the pleasure of flying over Brettenwood Coastal Estate many times, and what a privilege to now work here. The impression one gets from flying over the Estate is put into perspective the minute one drives onto it. The architecture is beautiful and the views from it really magnificent.

My background is largely in development and construction, and I am passionate about good workmanship and quality control. The Estate has a comprehensive set of rules and regulations that Richard Du Preez has done an excellent job of updating and streamlining. These are almost ready to go to print and will also be published on the Estate's website. It is a priority of mine to ensure that all the contractors on the Estate are aware of these rules and regulations so that they can all abide by them. This will also go a long way towards minimising the impact of building developments on the Estate's residents.
Vision for the definable greenbelt areas: We are now working with Simon Bundy of Sustainable Development Projects who has taken over as the Estate's environmentalist. He is producing a medium to long-term vision for the greenbelt areas. Each area will be different, but equally spectacular. We are investigating the introduction of game (Bush Buck / Impala) as well as the placing of some owl and bat boxes. This plan will strengthen the Estate's existing environmental controls.

Sales : Packages
Home Packages are a very attractive, viable and convenient option for people wanting a smooth building experience. The Estate has involved several different architectural companies to custom design five unique homes for some of the remaining sites of Phase 1 and on newly released sites of Phase 2 of Brettenwood Coastal Estate.

Each home will be unique, taking the topography of the land, the Estate's architectural footprint and the environment into consideration.

Below is a description of two of the homes designed by two of the architectural firms:
ERF 117 | Architect: Jimmy Vellisario Architects
It's not only classic homes that offer a relaxed lifestyle....situated on a corner site of 962m², this double storey residence maximises great views, natural light, and a unique architectural style and appearance.

It boasts 4 upper balcony bedrooms and a pyjama lounge off a contemporary stair hall, which leads down to a main entertainment ground floor storey. This consists of a generously staggered living and dining areas as well a background pub and sports viewing lounge.

A spacious under cover patio and barbeque area extending off the living room is well expressed by a private pool and walled landscape backdrop, offering the coastal lifestyle sought within this award winning Estate.
ERF 134 | Architect: CA Architects
The topography of the site is steep. There is an 11m fall from the road to the eastern boundary which features a richly forested green belt along its entire length. The site forms a triangular wedge shape from the north to south.

The inspiration for the design is Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Waters". The building "Cascades" down the steep site, utilising the natural fall and the forest, as a focus.
One arrives at the top level which consists of the double garage and entrance hall. The roof of the garage and stairs lobby is a flat concrete roof to be grassed thus blending in the garage with the landscape from street level.

The bedrooms are all nestled into the natural bush and the natural vegetation protects all eastern fenestration from the eastern sun. The indoor outdoor flow is maintained. All the en-suites have an outdoor shower extending the outdoor experience.

Kitchen and dining are at the same level with generous fenestration onto a private garden area on the north side of the site.

The lounge and living level is lower and extends into the natural bush of the estate with the covered verandah in timber decking as a natural product with a "Cascade" water feature from the entrance lobby roof creating its own "Waterfall".

The pool is surrounded in natural untreated balu to blend into the surroundings and the marbelite of the pool will have a green tint, giving it a more natural look.

Brettenwood Coastal Estate Logo
Brettenwood Coastal Estate is very proud of its logo. The most prominent element of the logo is the Pied Kingfisher, which is included in the logo because of the strong similarities between it and the Estate. The Pied Kingfisher is magnificent in appearance (so is this Estate), is found around water (the Estate has many dam views and is close to the Indian Ocean) and it is rather gregarious (we are a family Estate and as per the Pied Kingfisher, we prefer forming a roost to leading isolated lives).

Forest Village - Retire in Style
When our daughter went overseas, we made the decision to sell our house and move to an environment where we could happily (and without too much stress) live out our retirement. Forest Village was such an easy choice and we have been truly happy in our new home. When we moved in a year ago, who would have guessed that we would be appreciating it even more! Earlier this year Bob had to have a hip replacement operation and his recuperation at home on crutches has been relatively "painless". There is space to move around with ease, there are no steps to be negotiated, there is easy access to the bathrooms even the shower is level with the floor and he was able to enjoy the peace of our outdoor surroundings when he so wished. This experience has certainly shown us that we are in the right place!

Apart from the logistics of it all, we were surrounded by our many friends in the "village". The many phone calls and offers of assistance never ceased to amaze us. The care, concern and prayer were a fantastic comfort and what an incredible support system this is.

Sister Jill Watcher also kept in constant touch and visited to keep a watch on blood pressure etc.

Events in the Estate's Community
The Ballito Prawn and Jazz Festival, which will be held in Ballito from 2-4 July (the last weekend of the Mr Price-Pro Ballito surf contest) promises to be a lot of family fun and entertainment. Events being planned for the festival include sporting activities, music events, crafts, food and other retail markets and Stage entertainment. It is to be held within the well-known five hectare Collisheen Estate near Ballito, which is fenced and secure. It is also the centre of Holla Trails mountain biking, so mountatin biking events and a duathlon are also being planned.

The three day event will combine affordable prawn dishes with good music, sporting events and craft and retail markets. The focus will be on family fun and entertainment and will raise funds for community-based projects through local service clubs and charities.

Taking place 1 11 July, the Mr Price Pro Ballito is steeped in history as one of the longest running professional surfing events in the world. It attracts many of the world's top ranked surfers and South Africa's best to Ballito.

The 5-Star rated Mr Price Pro Ballito is a pillar on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and the ASP Africa circuit offering elite surfers the promise of valuable ASP ratings points as well as R1-million in prize money at the end of a week-long battle in the world-class waves of Ballito.

Top internationals will have their eyes fixed firmly on the Mr Price Pro Ballito crown but few will be as determined as the local contingent eager to join Ricky Basnett (Bluff, Durban), the only South African to win the event since Shaun Tomson's incredible six title reign in the "70s.
